Signing at the Autumn Leaf Festival!

In a few weeks it'll be time for the 43rd annual Maysville Autumn Leaf Festival, and this year there'll be a booth for FutureWord Publishing. Attending will be some author that absolutely nobody cares about...oh right, me! I'll be there selling and signing copies of "But Whether Men Do", so if you can get to Maysville, come over.

I'll be there on Saturday, October 2nd. The parade lasts from 10 to 11 AM, but afterwards I'll be at our booth, where you can find me and buy a signed copy. Directions and further details about the festival can be found here:

"Alpharetta author explores robotic, human condition"

I've been featured in the Alpharetta-Roswell News and Revue! It's good to see that I'm slowly entering the public eye. (I'm slowly entering the eye in a good way, mind you. Not the horrible, horrible eye parasite way.) The article can be read here:

If you have the actual newspaper, you might notice the page right after this article contains a story about Nicole Izmaylov, another FutureWord author and the most recent winner of the Georgia Author of the Year Award. Given all the Izmaylov family has done to help me bring "But Whether Men Do" to publication, I think the least I can do in return is help spread the good news about Nicole.

My first public appearance!

I will be appearing at Emory University this Sunday (August 1st) from 2-3:30 PM as part of their Arts at Emory event. I'll be reading from an excerpt of my book, doing a Q&A, and even selling signed copies of my book! This marks my first public appearance as a published author (although I did do a presentation at the Maysville Public Library before "But Whether Men Do" was released), so if you want to come see me, feel free!

It's here!

It's hard to believe over two years have passed between the day I began work on "But Whether Men Do" and today, the day of its release. But every last day of work has been worth it just for this. "But Whether Men Do" is now available for order on Amazon!

Back in Business.

Thought this blog was dead, did you? On the contrary, my friends, it's only begun! It's hard to believe it's been almost three months since I last updated this, but in that time I've managed to earn a contract under FutureWord Publishing. "But Whether Men Do" is undergoing editing at the moment, and will be out in due time. There isn't a definite release date yet (though as soon as there is I'll be sure to inform you all), but we're hoping to have it released around September.

Anyway, I should probably discuss the future of this blog. From hereon out, this blog will be used to basically deliver any updates regarding my writing career. For now, it'll just be updated periodically as my book nears release. Eventually, once the book is out, I think I'll devote updates to my book's reception, any signings or other public appearances I'm making, et cetera.

It'll be a while before I have another update to deliver, but in the meantime I'd like to direct you to FutureWord's official press release introducing me, straight from their own blog.

See you all soon!

Taking down "Ruins"

This hasn't been an easy decision, but I've decided to remove most of "Robotic Ruins" from this blog.

I made this blog to help attract new readers and potential publishers, and in that respect I've succeeded. Two very talented authors and good friends of mine (thanks, by the way!) have told a publisher about me. However, I've been informed that having my entire novel freely available online is simply unwise for any author that wants to be published, and after careful consideration I'm inclined to agree. My dream is being a successful published author, and if I'm not willing to seriously pursue my dream then I don't deserve to have it come true.

Since my book is presently under consideration for publication, the entire manuscript of "Ruins" has been removed, since having it available online could potentially jeopardize my career. I'll keep any readers notified if any good news comes my way, but for now it's best that I stop publishing my work online and try to get it professionally published. Wish me luck.

Oh, and if you were reading "Ruins" on the blog and are upset you can't finish it now, don't worry. Hopefully you'll be seeing it in a bookstore soon. :)

Sincerely,
R. Anthony Mahan

Progress Report.

Hey there! Thought I forgot about you all, didn't you? I don't want this blog collecting dust for too long, so I thought I'd give a little update on how "Ruins" is coming along.

It's clear I have a lot of work ahead of me before I'll be fit for publishing. To be honest, I'm kind of overwhelmed just thinking about all the changes I need to do for "Ruins". Chronic procrastinator that I am, I haven't really gotten around to it yet. But just so I can say I'm doing something, I've been working on three "cutaway" chapters.

These chapters don't focus on Danson, Mankins, and the other main characters, and don't have any real impact on the plot. However, they do give some depth to the setting (at least I hope so) and remind us that there are all these other SHIM owners we never really see. There are a lot of chapters in the book (especially in Part 1) that focus on other people with the main characters taking a backseat. A reader (thanks, by the way!) pointed out to me that this can be distracting, and if I'm going to temporarily shift focus to someone else it would be best to remove the main characters entirely. I decided to experiment with the idea and see if it works. At the moment, I've done two of the three planned cutaways. I want to get the third done, but I'm so caught up with college work and half the time I'm not even at home! (Meaning I can't use the computer my work is saved on.) I should have that third chapter done by this weekend, though (if Murphy's Law somehow prevents that, then definitely the weekend after). Once they're all done I'll put them up here.

Then I suppose I'll get to the real work. There's so much of it, but I guess I can just take it on a little bit at a time. Wish me luck!

Oh, and something you should know for when I put up the cutaway chapters. The first one takes place during Part 1, the second during Part 10, and the third during Part 11. Also, remember that these would be actual chapters in the book, not separate short stories. Try to imagine them in that context, because part of the feedback I'd like regarding the cutaways is if they disrupt the pacing too much or not.

Anyway, there's the update. Expect the cutaways soon, and I hope you're all doing great!
